The Photon Science (Materials science) Summer School was successfully held online from August 8th to 12th. The summer school was co-organized by Center for Transformative Science (CTS), School of Physical Science and Technology, and Graduate School. Around 20 experts and scholars from 9 institutes and 805 students gathered online and started a five-day intensive study and discussion.

Jie Yin, Executive Vice President and Provost of ShanghaiTech University delivered a welcome speech at the opening ceremony. He extended sincere gratitude to all the teachers and expressed a warm welcome to all the students who kept studying in the blazing hot summer. As the top-notch detection method, Big Science facilities play a critical role and have strategic significance for achieving technological self-reliance. Jie Yin also introduced the current development of a large-scale scientific facility cluster in the region of Shanghai Zhangjiang. He encouraged students to make full use of this precious training opportunity and hoped the summer school could lay a solid foundation in talent training and user development to support cutting-edge scientific research for the country.

The summer school invited a large number of prestigious experts at home and abroad to be key lecturers such as Zhentang Zhao, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and Donglai Feng, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Coming from 157 academic or scientific institutes worldwide, most of the participants were graduates and researchers, with the research areas ranging from material science, physics, optics, chemistry, to environmental science, etc. There were 20 lectures covering various topics such as Big Science facilities, accelerators, detection technology methodology, and others. Lecturers and teaching assistants presented comprehensive and detailed content and interacted with students to answer their questions whenever needed. Courses also placed emphasis on synchrotron radiation and free-electron laser device, explained the performance and features of relevant facilities in China, and systematically interpreted how Big Science facilities pushed forward science research fields like material science. Experts also provide a comprehensive and in-depth explanation of the basic principles and application examples of various detection methods based on different material characterization methods and scientific applications for students.

At the closing ceremony, the organizer and professor Tsu-Chien Weng and Zhi Liu from CTS expressed their appreciation again to all the employees and volunteers. They wished all the students to learn something useful and the best of luck for a bright future and wished the summer school would step up efforts to break the boundary and forge ahead for innovation, contributing its share to the construction and development of Big Science facilities of photon science in China.
