Fighting Together To Win The Battle Against Covid-19

The lovely April days stand for hope as flowers start blossoming outside the window. In the special period due to the pandemic control, all members of the Center for Transformative Science (CTS) of ShanghaiTech University stuck to their posts and fought together to protect the glorious city of Shanghai from coronavirus.

The university campus imposed the lockdown since midnight on March 13th. In response to the emergency, all the professors, some researchers and teachers on duty remained to stay on campus while some faculty members worked remotely from home, actively following pandemic prevention and control measures of the university or communities. All the teachers continued to work online as usual, pushing forward projects in a steady manner. The scientific research and study carried on and the exchange and cooperation kept making progress.

Shanghai started to implement a three-zone epidemic control system and carried out nucleic acid and antigen testing in batches since March 28th. Teachers who worked from home overcame the impact on their lives and responded to the call to tide over difficulties. Apart from performing their teaching tasks, many teachers also signed up to be volunteers working in communities and shouldered more responsibilities. Soon, the campus adopted the 7+7 pandemic prevention and control measures. For secondary contacts, they would undergo a week-long home quarantine with multiple PCR tests and were required to conduct another week of self-health observation, avoid gathering and reduce traveling. Teachers also actively participated in volunteer work to help students and safeguard the well-being of the university.

Construction of Big Science facilities also made steady progress including combing through the commission plan and preparing for the first batch of scientific experiments for SBP, completing the overall engineering design for SHINE and passing the test for its key prototype since mid-March. More good news came through. Technology for building TES-X ray detector chips finished the internal test with the energy resolution arriving at 6.5eV@5.9keV;Commissioning of the prototype of dual-mode spin- and momentum-resolved photoelectron microscope smoothly moved forward with a spatial resolution of 67nm. Multiple essential conferences were held as scheduled, for instance, the first engineering design review for key equipments of the beamline project, regular meetings of hard X-ray free electron laser beamline project, regular meetings on major projects, and technical meetings. The fourth Scientific Advisory Committee Conference for the AMO beamline of SHINE was also hosted.

When the pandemic swept across the city, countless medical staff, workers, and volunteers worked around the clock to fight the battle against covid-19 and built a strong barrier to protect teachers and students all over Shanghai from the virus. We would like to show our most heartfelt gratitude. Personnel of the CTS would strictly abide by the covid-19 guideline issued by the city of Shanghai, the university, and local communities, discharge our functions and join hands together to look forward to the blooming April.
