From July 5th to 10th, 2022, Coherence 2022: The International Conference on Phase Retrieval and Coherent Scattering were successfully held. The conference was held in a hybrid way with an onset conference and a virtual meeting. More than 500 people from more than 40 units around the world attended the conference. 35 international experts and 21 domestic experts were invited to make a total of 46 oral presentations.

The Coherence series of international conferences is currently the top international conference on coherence and scattering imaging methodologies in the fields of X-ray free electron lasers, synchrotron radiation, electron microscopy, and optics. Since it was first held in 2001and has been held every two years. So far, it has held 10 sessions. The organizers are all academic units with great international influence in this field. This series of conferences was held for the first time in Zhangjiang Science City, a science and technology center in Shanghai, China. The conference focused on the latest progress and prospects of coherent light sources including synchrotron radiation, free electron lasers, electron beams, and ultraviolet coherent light sources and their applications. With X-ray free electron lasers and new diffraction-limited synchrotron radiation facilities, the brightness and coherence of light sources have been greatly improved, bringing revolutionary development opportunities to scientific research.

The conference was co-chaired by Academician Zhao Zhentang of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Professor Jiang Huaidong of ShanghaiTech University, and Researcher Chen Bo of Tongji University. Academician Zhao Zhentang attended the opening ceremony, extended his sincere welcome to all the participants, and wished the conference a complete success.

The conference has a total of 12 sessions, covering frontier scientific topics such as coherent diffraction imaging technology, Bragg coherent diffraction imaging technology, scanning coherent diffraction imaging, X-ray photon correlation spectroscopy, and the development of advanced light source facilities. The conference invited participants from the Paul Scherr Institute, Northwestern University, Pohang Free Electron Laser, Tohoku University, Oxford University, European Synchrotron Radiation Facility, European Free Electron Laser, SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory, Fresnel Institute, Max Planck Institute, Tsinghua University, Shanghai Synchrotron Radiation Facility, The Institute of High Energy Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Hefei Advanced Light Facility, Southern University of Science and Technology and other well-known academic institutions reported the latest research progress. The conference was attended by famous scientists in related fields worldwide, as well as young researchers and students. The venue's atmosphere was warm, and the audience asked questions enthusiastically. Everyone had a fruitful exchange and discussion on the core technologies of many advanced light source facilities and the development achievements in the field of coherent scattering imaging. Professor Ian Robinson, a member of the academic advisory committee of Coherence 2022 and a senior expert in the field of Bragg diffractive imaging, said that he was very grateful for this valuable exchange opportunity provided by the conference organizing committee. 'I am amazed at the China Speed on these devices, and I hope to conduct cutting-edge research on these devices one day.'

Liu Zhi, director of the Center of Transmissive Science at ShanghaiTech University, attended the closing ceremony and made a closing summary. He said that the conference effectively promoted exchanges and cooperation worldwide in the field of coherent scattering and phase retrieval science and technology, and looked forward to experts and scholars coming face to face the next time. This conference provides a wide and transparent exchange platform for science and technology in the field of coherent scattering, promotes the development of cutting-edge scientific research in the field of coherence, and provides scientific guidance for my country to build a world-class advanced X-ray light source project.
